Honestly I don't believe Axl's voice is all gone, I strongly believe he got distracted by confusing concepts about voice when he was going through a lot of stuff, apparently he went to vocal coaches and recently in a short interview he said he believes he's being better and singing clean I think, but honestly nowadays he doesn't sound clean nor raspy, he's kinda stuck in the middle with a weird tone. I'm not saying that vocal technique doesn't matter but mind comes first and Axl was a free bird, he probably never ever thought about "passagio" or 'vocal break' in his prime years he was just doing his thing every night without thinking too much, maybe he started overthinking stuff and then he started to try and replicate his younger self? Idk, mental and emotional blockages. What do you guys think about that

Usually, this singers that rely on rasp, compressed m2 start sounding different with age. Cornell did a good job of readapting, but that slight rasp he had is no longer possible to maintain when reaching certain ages. Your ligaments and tendons start to stiffen and some vocal configurations are difficult or even harmful(only some cases)
You can see an example of this listening to the last live version of beyond the wheel and the first one. Hes got a cleaner tone and only ads distortion somtimes while younger he could sing the whole song in that raspy tone and add heavy distortion when needed.
so axl got that trademark sound in the 80s by doing it as u say night after night for years on end very little holiday with zero singing what so ever until the mid 90s they break up and theres no more live shows until mid 2000s and young "prime" axl sounds like mickey
why?
well hes out of practice he hasnt got that muscle memory on how to create the distortion sound and then after a few years of doing it again and again he releases chinese democracy laying down some of his most CRAZY vocals and having crazy live show consistency with distortion with a few shows without distortion leading to 2016 were hes doing both gnr and acdc and his distortion becomes noticeably more pushed and forced than it used to be and everything after those two giant mega tours that overlapped have sounded like mickey probably bc of the same reasons he sounded like mickey after a long break from singing, he took a long break from singing after that mega tour
i wouldnt be surprised if he got it back again but i agree some vocal coach/es could have easily messed him up and got paid to do so

Some of these singers really just figured it out fr fr and then they go take lessons and they either can't help for shit or make it worse for sure. I wonder what Freddie Mercury's lessons were like when he took a few to get 'help' because his voice was getting tired (or something like that). The teacher was probably throwing around concepts hoping it'd help but like brah, that's Freddie Mercury what are you going to teach him lmfaoasdksadosa. And he's not going to restart his entire technique from scratch to suit live singing into Marc Martel's or smth, it's probably a weird waste of energy at that point
