a lot of singers have a more closed mouth when singing to achieve an effect like this, he definitely isnt squeezing his larynx way up and is using compression to get that distortion, the way he can do little riffs and runs proves there isnt tension in his throat. he does this thing called "yarling" a lot of country singers do it an a lot of rock, alternative, grunge singers did this as well, if you ever see dave mustain from megadeth sing he also sings with a very closed mouth to get that gritty kind of angry sound. a lot of nasal resonance too

Crazy effortless distortion surely. I wonder if that's present on his speaking voice or something. Sort of like Roger Taylor from Queen. It's like built-in into it, although he used a lot of M2.
